Kane Brown's

According to Kane Brown the creation of "The High Road" was a lengthy process spanning two years since his previous album release. Despite the extended production time Brown felt the album creation was somewhat rushed. He prefers releasing singles more frequently to satisfy his fanbase's desire for quicker music releases instead of long waits for full albums. "Backseat Driver" a track on the album had been circulating in Nashville for five years before Brown encountered it. He connected with the song feeling as if he had personally written it.

A last-minute addition to "The High Road" was the collaboration with Khalid on "Rescue" . This song was written shortly before the album's submission deadline. The track "Body Talk" featuring Katelyn Brown was initially intended as a collaboration with Selena Gomez. However Katelyn Brown expressed interest in the song and ultimately performed the female vocals. The song "Haunted" originated from Brown's experience in a hotel room with a bank vault which inspired a song about feeling haunted that evolved into a reflection on depression. Jelly Roll joined this track as a collaborator.

Another collaboration on the album is with Brad Paisley on "Things We Quit". After Brown posted a snippet of this song online fans commented that they heard Paisley on it. Brown then sent the song to Paisley who contributed to the track and added a guitar solo. "Stay" a Sugarland cover is also featured on "The High Road". Brown mentioned this song was his mother's favorite and he decided to include his own rendition on the album.
