Mets Opening Day Disaster? Clay Holmes' First Start a Wild Ride Against Astros
The New York Mets kicked off their season against the Houston Astros and well it was not exactly a smooth start. Pitcher Clay Holmes making his first ever Opening Day start had a bit of a messy outing. In each of the last four innings he pitched Holmes found himself in trouble. He managed to keep the Mets somewhat in the game but it was definitely a bumpy ride.
Ultimately Holmes ended up with the loss in the Mets' 3-1 defeat. He gave up three runs only one was unearned walked four batters hit another one and allowed five hits in just under five innings. Not exactly the debut he was hoping for.
Holmes himself admitted "I think the big thing was the walks. I gave them five free passes — the walks and a hit-by-pitch. My game is limiting slug and basically limiting free passes. And I gave them those extra free passes today to give them enough base runners to create some traffic there." Mets manager Carlos Mendoza noted Holmes sinker was not working as effectively which made things difficult against a right-handed heavy Astros lineup.
It wasn't all bad for the Mets bullpen Huascar Brazoban had a solid outing pitching two and one-third scoreless innings and keeping the game within reach. And Pete Alonso showed some promising plate discipline laying off pitches outside the strike zone. Still Opening Day losses are never fun especially for a team looking to make a statement right out of the gate.
Orioles Dominate Blue Jays in High-Scoring Opening Day Showdown

In another Opening Day matchup the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays faced off in a game that was anything but a pitcher's duel. The Orioles offense exploded leading to a dominant 12-2 victory over the Blue Jays.
Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman had a monster game hitting two home runs and driving in three runs. Cedric Mullins also went yard twice for Baltimore adding five RBIs of his own. Toronto starter Jose Berrios struggled allowing a three-run homer to Orioles outfielder Tyler O'Neill who continued his incredible Opening Day home run streak. O'Neill actually extended his major league record by homering on Opening Day for the SIXTH straight year. That is a mind-boggling stat.
O'Neill went 3-for-3 with two walks and scored three runs in an amazing performance in his home country of Canada. Even before the game O'Neill was contributing bringing boxes of Tim Hortons donuts for his Orioles teammates a tradition he started last year with the Red Sox when visiting Toronto.
For Blue Jays fans it was a tough start to the season but hey it is just one game. For Orioles fans though it was a dream Opening Day scenario a dominant win fueled by home runs and a record-breaking performance. This kind of game gets everyone excited for the season ahead.
