You know Ayo Edebiri right? She's been killing it lately especially in "The Bear" and now "Inside Out 2." Well she recently found herself in the middle of some totally bonkers internet drama and it all started with a fake news story and Elon Musk . Yep you read that right. Buckle up because this is a wild ride.
Fake 'Pirates' Reboot Casting News Sparks Online Firestorm and Targets Ayo Edebiri
So here's the deal. Back in February 2024 a rumor started swirling online. It claimed Ayo Edebiri was going to replace Johnny Depp in a " Pirates of the Caribbean " reboot. Sounds crazy right? Because it was. This story came from a right-wing account called "Unlimited L's" which as far as anyone can tell has zero inside info on Hollywood or anything really.
But guess who decided to amplify this completely made-up story? Elon Musk himself. He reposted it with the comment "Disney sucks." And that is when things went from silly to seriously messed up. Suddenly Ayo Edebiri was dealing with a tidal wave of online hate.
'Insane Death Threats and Racial Slurs': Ayo Edebiri Reveals Horrific Online Abuse After Musk's Post

Ayo took to Instagram to share just how awful things got. She wrote that she received "some of the most insane death threats and racial slurs of my life" because of this fake casting rumor. She was clear this was all because of "this man" meaning Elon Musk and his decision to share the bogus report.
Think about that for a second. Someone just going about their life gets bombarded with horrific abuse simply because of a lie spread online and boosted by a billionaire with millions of followers. It is a stark reminder of how quickly fake news can spiral out of control and the real-world harm it can cause.
Ayo in her Instagram story also called out Musk directly referencing his salute at a Donald Trump event saying "So not only is he double sg hl-ing fascist he’s an idiot but anyway.” She clearly wasn't holding back her feelings about the whole situation and Musk's actions.
'Pirates' Reboot Still in the Works (Maybe with Depp?) But Ayo Was Never Involved

To be clear Ayo Edebiri was never actually cast in any "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie reboot or anything related. It was completely made up. Even though there were rumors of Margot Robbie possibly leading a female-focused spin-off years ago none of that is confirmed and Ayo was never attached to any of it.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has even said that if it was up to him Johnny Depp would be back as Captain Jack Sparrow in a future "Pirates" film. So the whole idea of Ayo replacing Depp was just baseless internet fiction.
Despite the negativity Ayo is not letting it slow her down. She voiced Envy in the hit movie " Inside Out 2 " and she has a new horror film called "Opus" coming out. Plus she is writing and starring in a live-action "Barney" movie with Daniel Kaluuya which sounds like it will be a wild and unique project.
Ayo Edebiri: Talented Actress Hilarious Comedian and Not Here for Online Bullies
This whole "Pirates" fake news mess shows just how toxic online fandoms can get and how easily misinformation spreads. Ayo Edebiri handled it with humor and strength calling out the absurdity of the situation while also highlighting the very real abuse she faced.
She is clearly not letting internet trolls derail her career. Ayo Edebiri is a seriously talented actress a hilarious comedian and she is just getting started. From "The Bear" to "Inside Out 2" and whatever she does next it is clear Ayo is one to watch and definitely someone who won't back down from online nonsense.
