Senior Sex Scandals and Murder Mysteries? Palo Alto Gets a Raunchy Musical Comedy!

Okay Palo Alto folks you have got a new musical in town and it sounds like a wild ride! It is called "Happy Pleasant Valley: A Senior Sex Scandal Murder Mystery Musical". Yes you read that correctly. TheatreWorks Silicon Valley and Center Repertory Company teamed up for this one and the reviews are in - they are definitely… mixed .

So what's the deal? Imagine a senior living community where things are getting spicy. We have got June a sassy septuagenarian played by Emily Kuroda who might just be a serial killer of lovers. Then there is her Gen Z granddaughter Jade a vlogger who gets caught up in trying to solve the mystery and boost her online profile at the same time. Sounds like a recipe for some laughs right?

The reviews point out some funny bits for sure. Danny Scheie is apparently hilarious as a sly resident and the show does not shy away from some adult language and themes - yes even old folks cuss! Sophie Oda who plays Jade gets props for her voice and authentic performance. But some reviewers felt the plot is a bit too long silly and the songs besides one or two are not super memorable. Basically it's a mixed bag but definitely sounds like a unique night out at the theater!

Meet the Residents of Happy Pleasant Valley (Cast Highlights):

  • June: Played by Emily Kuroda the possibly deadly grandma.
  • Jade: Played by Sophie Oda the Gen Z vlogger granddaughter.
  • Vicki: Played by Lucinda Hitchcock Cone a squirrel-loving resident.
  • Mort: Played by Danny Scheie the secretly bisexual resident providing comic relief.
  • Dean: Played by Miller Liberatore Jade's nonbinary cameraman and secret admirer.

Switching gears from musical theater to sports ouch New York Yankees fans just got some tough news. Star pitcher Gerrit Cole is going to need Tommy John surgery . That means he is out for the entire 2025 season before it even starts. Double bummer.

This is a huge blow for the Yankees. Cole is their ace their Cy Young Award winner and basically their pitching workhorse. He is going to be sidelined for all of 2025 and probably part of 2026 too. They were already dealing with Luis Gil being out with an injury and now this. Their pitching rotation is suddenly looking pretty shaky.

Cole had some elbow pain earlier this spring but tried to rehab it. Unfortunately it turned out to be a torn ligament requiring surgery. He is getting the surgery in Los Angeles and says he is committed to rehab and coming back "stronger than ever". Yankees fans are hoping he can pull off a comeback but it is going to be a long road.

Yankees Pitching Shake-Up - Who Will Step Up?

  • Rotation Leaders: Max Fried Carlos Rodon Clarke Schmidt will now be at the top of the rotation.
  • Stepping In: Marcus Stroman is expected to move into the rotation. Rookie Will Warren and veteran Carlos Carrasco are potential options too.
  • Free Agent/Trade Market: The Yankees might look to sign a free agent pitcher like Kyle Gibson or Lance Lynn or even make a trade.
  • Recovery Timeline: Gerrit Cole's surgery means he's out for 2025 and part of 2026.
