From Beekeeper to Builder: Jason Statham Plays an Everyman with a Deadly Past in A Working Man

Fresh off the success of The Beekeeper which was a surprise box office hit Jason Statham is teaming up again with director David Ayer. Their new project A Working Man is based on the book series Levon's Trade by Chuck Dixon. Statham plays Levon Cade a former black ops soldier who has tried to leave his violent past behind him.

Now Levon is living a quiet life working construction just trying to be a good dad to his daughter. But of course peace never lasts long in an action movie. When his boss Michael Peña's daughter gets kidnapped by human traffickers Levon has to dust off his old skills. He is going back into action to rescue her and he is going to uncover a whole lot of nasty corruption along the way.

What follows is pure Statham mayhem. Broken limbs smashed faces and general badassery ensue. Levon takes down the whole crew with his signature blend of brutal efficiency and lightning-fast moves. If you were wondering if Statham still has it well this clip answers that question with a resounding YES.

Director David Ayer on Statham's Relatability and Stallone's Writing Touch

IGN also got to chat with director David Ayer about A Working Man and what makes Jason Statham so perfect for these roles. Ayer pointed out that Statham has a "working man mindset" because he has "worked his way up in life started humbly". He's "that man next door incredibly gracious and respectful" and that truth comes across on screen. Audiences connect with that even though Statham's characters are super skilled fighters.

Sylvester Stallone also has a writing credit on A Working Man. Ayer said Stallone provided an "amazing starting point" and was "incredibly collaborative". Stallone helped find a "cinematic arc" in Chuck Dixon's book and Ayer enjoyed working with such a "lauded writer". With Ayer directing and Stallone involved in the writing this movie has some serious action movie pedigree.

Is A Working Man the Start of a New Jason Statham Franchise? Eleven Books and Counting!

Here's the thing that could make A Working Man way bigger than just one movie. It is based on a book series with eleven books already written by Chuck Dixon. The first book is called Levon's Trade and that is what this movie adapts . If A Working Man is a success there is a ton of source material ready for sequels.

Imagine Jason Statham playing Levon Cade for the next decade or even two decades adapting a new book every couple of years. It could be his next big franchise to rival Fast & Furious or The Expendables. There are eleven Levon Cade books right now and who knows Chuck Dixon might write even more. The potential for a long-running action series is definitely there.

Of course it all depends on how A Working Man does. But with Statham back in action Ayer directing and a solid book series to draw from this movie has a real shot at becoming Statham's next big thing and launching a massive new action franchise.
