Sounds heroic right? Well it wouldn't be Chicago Med if things were easy. Ripley isn't just dealing with a risky rescue he is also emotionally wrecked.

Remember he is suspended from work after that bar fight and Hannah Asher just broke up with him. As Luke Mitchell who plays Ripley puts it his character is "really not in a good place". This well rescue situation becomes "the perfect thing at the perfect time for Ripley" Mitchell reveals. It's a major distraction but also a huge wake-up call. Things are about to get seriously dangerous for Ripley as he tries to save these people. Like "worse danger" than the victims dangerous!

Luke Mitchell Spills the Tea: "Most Challenging Episode Ever" and Ripley's Dark Place

Chicago Med Episode 15

Luke Mitchell himself is calling "Down in a Hole" the "most challenging episode" he has ever filmed. He told TVLine it was both "emotionally and physically challenging". Filming involved building sets for the well and rescue tunnel and get this they even shot on location outside in Chicago in January! That's dedication folks.

Mitchell explains that Ripley is really wrestling with his demons in this episode. He is rejecting help even ignoring calls from Dr. Frost who is clearly worried. This rescue mission throws Ripley right into the fire forcing him to confront his issues head-on while literally being in a hole. It sounds like a make-or-break moment for the troubled doctor.

Mitchell also shared that he hopes Ripley survives the episode so he can keep his job on Chicago Med because well he "very much like[s] working on Chicago Med"! Fingers crossed for Ripley and Luke both!

Bromance Alert? Ripley Teams Up with Mouch from Chicago Fire!

Chicago Med Episode 15

Speaking of crossovers get this: Mouch from Chicago Fire is involved in the well rescue! Christian Stolte who plays Mouch is guest-starring in Episode 15 and it looks like Ripley and Mouch are teaming up to save the day. Remember their tense interactions during the One Chicago crossover? Well Mitchell says this episode lets them build on that but in a cool way.

He describes it as a "great opportunity to build on the rapport that they came to by the end of the crossover." Despite a rocky start Mitchell says there was "mutual respect and understanding" between Ripley and Mouch after that crossover event. Now they get to "re-meet each other under different circumstances and team up for this rescue and get to know each other a little bit better." Could this be the start of an unlikely One Chicago bromance? We are here for it!

Asher and Ripley: Is There Any Hope for Reconciliation?

Chicago Med Episode 15

What about Hannah Asher in all this Ripley drama? Well she is in the dark about Ripley's dangerous rescue mission until later in the episode. Mitchell teases that Hannah is "blissfully unaware" at first but then gets told about the situation creating a "fairly dramatic climax".

Will this ordeal make Hannah reconsider the breakup? Mitchell hints that it might at least "help give her a nudge to articulate her feelings a little bit better." He thinks there are still "some things left unsaid from the breakup." While he is an "eternal optimist" and hopes they could reconcile Mitchell also believes "the breakup was necessary." He explains "Ripley isn't good enough for her at this moment and he's got to do some serious work on himself if he is to become good enough for her." So maybe there is hope for Ripley and Asher down the road but Ripley has some serious self-improvement to do first.

Fan Buzz: Will Ripley's Character Be Better Off Single?

Fans online have strong opinions about Ripley and Asher's relationship. Some are totally over it. One commenter on TVLine even "literally screamed with excitement when they broke up" calling their relationship "boring and artificial". Ouch! Others feel like Hannah and Dean Archer have more chemistry and should be together.

Some viewers think Ripley's character might actually be more likeable if he wasn't tied to Hannah. One comment suggested "Maybe people will like Ripley’s character more if he wasn’t with Hannah. It seems like fans dislike Ripley on social media because of this relationship." Could Ripley being single actually be good for his character arc? We will have to wait and see!
