Hold on to your stethoscopes 'Chicago Med' fans because things are about to get seriously dramatic for Dr. Mitch Ripley. Even though he's been sidelined with a suspension it looks like trouble just has a way of finding him. And this time it's a doozy. We're talking a woman and her daughter trapped in an abandoned well kind of doozy! Actor Luke Mitchell who plays Ripley is spilling the tea on what to expect in the upcoming episode and it sounds intense.
Suspended But Still Saving Lives: Ripley's Outside the Hospital and Into a Whole New Kind of Emergency
So how does a Suspended Dr. Ripley end up knee-deep in a well rescue? According to Luke Mitchell it all starts with Ripley being Ripley. He's coming back from out of town maybe not in the best headspace and gets a little distracted while driving. Mitchell explained to TV Insider that "Ripley is coming back from out of town. He gets distracted and he kind of clips a car and he’s obviously concerned that he’s hurt someone."
But here is the twist no one's in the clipped car! Being the good doc he is Ripley doesn't just drive off. "Then he goes looking for whoever the occupants were and that’s when he discovers — he’s the one that finds them down the well" Mitchell revealed. Leave it to Ripley to stumble into a major emergency even when he's supposed to be taking a break!
This episode titled " Down In a Hole " airing March 5th sounds like it's going to be different from your typical 'Chicago Med' episode which usually sticks within the hospital walls. Mitchell teased that it felt "surreal" and more like "shooting an independent movie".
Mini 'Chicago Fire' Crossover? Mouch to the Rescue (Maybe...) and a Rare On-Location Shoot

Speaking of different this episode is even bringing in some 'Chicago Fire' flavor. Get ready for a mini-crossover featuring none other than Mouch played by Christian Stolte . Mitchell was hyped about working with Stolte again especially after their intense scenes together during a past crossover event where a loved one's life was on the line.
Mitchell shared "Oh it’s wonderful. Yeah. I had the pleasure of working with Christian during the crossover event obviously. And yeah he’s a wonderful guy and a wonderful actor. When I found out that they were pitching his character to be the one to do this mini crossover I was very very excited."
Adding to the unique feel of the episode was the on-location shooting. Mitchell described it as "crazy" because 'Chicago Med' almost always films indoors. "It didn’t feel like we’re shooting an episode of Chicago Med. It felt like we were shooting an independent movie because we had three days out on location sort of an hour and a half out of Chicago" he said. They even filmed during a real "arctic blast" in Chicago making it even more intense.
Imagine fire trucks ambulances cop cars and news trucks all set up outside of the usual hospital setting. It definitely sounds like a "big deal" as Mitchell put it.
Ripley's Rock Bottom? Near-Death Experience Promises to "Shake Him Up"

But this well rescue is not just about action and drama it sounds like it will have a big impact on Ripley's character arc. Mitchell hinted that Ripley is not in a good place emotionally leading up to this episode. "He’s not great. He’s not great at all. Yeah it’s kind of a wild ride that he’s on at the moment. It just feels like after each episode that he’s just going further and further downward. And I fear that he has to hit rock bottom metaphorically and maybe physically" Mitchell revealed.
And "rock bottom" might be closer than we think. The promo for the episode teases that Ripley himself might end up in danger after some kind of collapse during the rescue. Mitchell confirmed that Ripley will be in "all of the trouble" and that it is "at least a near-death experience."
He believes this experience will "shake him and a lot of people up." Will this near-death situation be the thing that finally forces Ripley to confront his inner demons and start climbing back up? Or will this push him even further down "in a hole"? You will have to tune in to find out!
