A new action RPG Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is bringing back fan's attention to the acclaimed fourth season of Game of Thrones . Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is slated for release later in 2025 and is developed by Netmarble. This upcoming game will allow players to walk through recognizable locations like Winterfell King's Landing and Highgarden. More significantly Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is teasing the roles that well-known characters will play in the game's original story.
Game of Thrones: Kingsroad's reveal trailer debuted at The Game Awards 2024 and presented several established characters as they appear within the game. A gameplay trailer for Game of Thrones: Kingsroad followed shortly after further heightening interest just before its first closed beta test. Game Rant recently spoke with Netmarble Neo division director Hyun-il Jang to explore the narrative the characters and the events unfolding in Westeros within this new game.
How Game of Thrones: Kingsroad Incorporates Iconic Characters into a New Narrative
Developers Focused On Replicating Appearances and Personalities
While Game of Thrones: Kingsroad introduces original characters it also incorporates many characters already seen in live-action. This presented developers with the challenge of adapting real people's appearances. Jang explained how Netmarble tackled this task aiming to capture the essence of each character.
According to Jang "The design team focused on replicating the appearances from iconic characters in the show and capturing their personalities and individual roles. Based on their on-screen appearances we worked on 3D models and carefully reviewed animation scenarios to ensure they matched each character’s personality. We refined details like facial expressions to enhance authenticity. For example we made sure to portray Ramsay’s sadistic expressions and timid demeanor when with his father to effectively convey these traits in key scenes."
Game of Thrones: Kingsroad features both a realistic art style and an open world which could have amplified the design challenge. However trailers for the game have already showcased characters' appearances rendered in high fidelity. Jang emphasized the design team's commitment to capturing each character's personality. Although in-game footage of Kingsroad's story is currently limited this attention to detail suggests positive prospects for the final product.
What Kingsroad Story Means For Game Of Thrones Fans

Players Will Take on the Role of Heir to Fallen House Tyre
Game of Thrones is famous for its large cast of compelling characters and the complex political conflicts among them. Kingsroad promises an original narrative set during Game of Thrones Season 4. Jang noted that this period with tensions rising across Westeros provided a perfect setting for a compelling narrative. He further detailed the player character's role in the conflicts of Kingsroad.
Jang stated "The player assumes the role of the heir to House Tyre a fallen noble family of the North. House Tyre has lost its former status and the protagonist’s father is gravely ill. To restore their house and fulfill their duty as a Northerner the protagonist begins a difficult journey. Alongside Jon Snow they witness the terrifying threat of the White Walkers in the Haunted Forest. Unable to leave the Wall Jon entrusts the protagonist with a mission to travel across Westeros to warn of the approaching danger and seek support for the North while working to gain recognition as the rightful heir of their house."
Jang also hinted at a key moment in the reveal trailer suggesting a major encounter with Cersei Lannister. Players should expect to start with little and gradually climb the ranks as they engage in the game of thrones. There will be challenges along the way but Jon Snow is positioned to offer support to the protagonist. Lord Varys also has a prominent role in the reveal trailer possibly indicating how he and other characters will interact with the player throughout their adventure.
Our Take On The Game Of Thrones Kingsroad Game

Kingsroad Appears To Offer Combat Politics and Cooperative Play
Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is being developed for both phones and PC by Netmarble. Netmarble aims to fully involve Game of Thrones enthusiasts in an open world setting unlike anything experienced before. Hyun-il Jang mentioned that players "will have chance to explore Winterfell under Bolton control the impressive King's Landing and even Highgarden which was previously only shown from a distance. Additionally areas not featured in the show are carefully recreated with significant detail."
While Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is designed for mobile devices Netmarble seems committed to delivering an immersive and feature-rich experience. The trailers demonstrate the game's visual quality and it will feature a completely new story set in the latter half of Game of Thrones' fourth season.
Kingsroad seems to balance combat and role-playing aspects . Players will choose from three classes at the start: Sellsword Knight and Assassin each modeled after iconic characters like Tormund Giantsbane Jaime Lannister and Arya Stark respectively.
According to Jang "the Sellsword with a tough look wields a large axe suggesting a slow but powerful combat style. The Sellsword delivers slower but powerful attacks and excels at fighting groups of enemies. The Assassin with a smaller build and dual daggers is designed for quick hit-and-run tactics using skills like stealth and smoke bombs to confuse enemies and gain advantage. The Knight wielding a longsword may seem basic but offers the strongest performance for beginners. With balanced stats and simple attack patterns the Knight allows players to quickly understand combat mechanics and advance more easily compared to other classes."
Players will face soldiers bandits wights White Walkers and even bears on their journey. Jang added "Mysterious gameplay elements also exist allowing players to witness past events or mythical figures through Weirwood trees and participate in cooperative play to defeat spectral threats."
On the role-playing side players will climb through ranks and interact with well-known characters. Trailers show Jon Snow Jaime Lannister Cersei Lannister Varys and Olenna Tyrell. Jang noted " Political maneuvering and its results whether planned or not are some of the most interesting and memorable parts of the show. One of the team's key goals was to bring these moments into the game's interactive story. Initially players will not be influential in the game of thrones. However as the story progresses they will realize that even minor figures have a role and choices to make. Kingsroad lets players handle situations their way creating their own paths through Westeros's complex political scene."
