This episode is a rollercoaster of emotions major reveals and enough cliffhangers to make you scream at your screen. Let's unpack everything that went down in this wild ride before the finale.
Dylan's Heartbreak and Shock Resignation: Did He Just Quit Lumon For Good?!
Poor Dylan. We started with him reeling from his kiss with Gretchen and let's just say things went south fast. Gretchen confessed everything to Dylan's outie and yeah he was not thrilled. Can you blame the guy? But honestly Gretchen is drawn to Dylan's innie because he reminds her of who her husband used to be before Severance. Ouch that's gotta sting.
When Gretchen dumps Dylan G he is absolutely crushed. Meeting her made his innie life feel real. In a desperate move he gets down on one knee proposes with a cardboard ring and pours his heart out. Gretchen gently says no and leaves. It's brutal.
Devastated Dylan does something huge. He walks straight to Milchick and hands in his resignation. Milchick gives him the cold corporate stare says it is ingratitude. But Ms. Huang actually shows some humanity for once telling Dylan she is sorry and "should have facilitated better". Dylan surprisingly comforts her says "It’s not your fault". Then he walks out heads to the elevator and leaves the severed floor. Is this really the end of Dylan at Lumon? Is his resignation even going to be accepted?
Eagan Family Creepiness Level Maxed Out: Helly R. and Helena Face Their Father's Weirdness
We got a double dose of Eagan family weirdness in this episode with both Helly R and Helena having to deal with Jame Eagan their seriously strange dad. Helena asks her dad to join her for breakfast but he just says he will "just watch". Super creepy. Then he watches her eat hard-boiled eggs in tiny bites and says "I wish you’d take them raw." Seriously WHAT does that even mean? Eagan family breakfasts are officially disturbing.
Later Jame Eagan shows up in MDR and startles Helly R. He accuses her of betraying him. Are they going to have a showdown? Is Helly in danger? It ends right there another cliffhanger!
Milchick Under Pressure: Bosses Breathing Down His Neck and a Glimmer of Humanity?
Milchick had a rough episode. First he tells Ms. Huang she is being promoted out of the severed floor clearly as petty revenge for her complaints. He is definitely not happy with her. Then Mr. Drummond his boss totally dresses him down. Cold Harbor is supposed to be done today a huge day for Lumon but Mark is MIA. Drummond is furious and Milchick is feeling the heat.
In a funny power play Drummond criticizes Milchick's vocabulary makes him apologize for using long words. Milchick finally snaps tells Drummond to "devour feculence" which is a fancy way of saying eat sht. He reminds Drummond that he is only in charge of the severed floor and anything outside is Drummond's problem. Mic drop Milchick style.
Later Mark calls in sick and Milchick actually sounds almost human for a second. Mark throws Lumon's work-life balance motto back at him and Milchick is silent. Maybe for a split second he is questioning things? Nah probably not. He just makes Mark promise to come in tomorrow. Milchick is still all about Lumon but you can see the pressure is getting to him.
Irving and Burt: A Heartbreaking Goodbye and a Train Ride Out of Kier?
The Irving and Burt storyline took a sad turn. Irving finds Burt going through his notes. Turns out Irving has been investigating Lumon disappearances and deaths and Burt Goodman might be connected. Burt is offended by being called a "goon" says Lumon is "very specific with its language". Of course he does.
Burt confesses he was just a driver never hurt anyone never asked questions. Severance was his way to have an innocent side. Irving takes Burt to a train station tells him he has to leave Kier for good Lumon will come after him. "They’ll come after you" Irving warns. Burt brushes it off he does not seem scared.
Then comes the emotional gut punch. Irving tells Burt "I’ve never been loved until Burt G on the severed floor." He is ready to risk everything for that love. He says "I’m ready". Burt is not swayed. There is no romantic goodbye just heartbreak. Irving and his dog board the train Burt is left alone in the station looking defeated.
Mark in Hiding and Cold Harbor Reveal Tease: What is Lumon Really Planning?
Mark is now hiding in Harmony Cobel's truck and she and Devon smuggle him into the birthing cabins. Cobel makes up a story about Devon being "one of Jame’s" to get past security. Apparently Jame Eagan has a lot of secrets Lumon cleans up using severance tech. Mark S wakes up confused and disoriented in the cabin. The episode ends with Cobel standing in front of the fireplace looking well diabolical. What is she planning? What is Cold Harbor and why does Gemma need to die when it's done?
Mark finally starts reintegration but it is slow going. He and Reghabi started this process way back in Episode 3 and not much progress has been made. But at the end when Innie Mark emerges in the cabin and Devon asks him to remember what he said to her at the end of Season 1 goosebumps alert! Memory and connection are key themes here.
Harmony finally reveals Cold Harbor but does not explain what it is supposed to do. It feels like the show is holding back information just like in Lost season 3 when Ben promised to answer one question and Jack asked something totally irrelevant. Hopefully the Severance finale will give us some real answers about Cold Harbor and Gemma.
