Jamie Campbell Bower shared that embodying Vecna for Netflix's Stranger Things had a significant mental impact. The actor also suggested the final season of the popular series will be exceptionally intense. Known for his portrayal of the formidable villain introduced in Stranger Things season 4 Bower recently spoke at MegaCon Orlando about the emotional demands of the role and his future acting choices.
During a panel at MegaCon Orlando Bower who joined Stranger Things in season 4 as Vecna (also known as Henry Creel and Subject 001) admitted to needing therapeutic support to manage the psychological aspects of playing such a dark character. According to People Bower recounted a conversation with his therapist stating "We were going through some stuff and he was like ‘We really need to make sure that you carve out time for you whenever you’re working next.’ I turned around to him and I was like ‘Yeah to be honest with you man I just don’t think I’ll be doing another bad guy for a minute.’"
Bower emphasized the seriousness of his statement about stepping back from villainous roles. "Like it f—s me up" he added. "I’m dead serious." Despite the challenges Bower expressed gratitude for his time on Stranger Things. "It’s been amazing and it’s been an incredible journey to join the show from season 4 to be part of something that so many people love and something that I loved as well and still love. But I definitely am ready to hang up the foam latex and wish him a slippery farewell" Bower concluded.
While the release date for the fifth and final season of Stranger Things remains unconfirmed creators Matt and Ross Duffer have hinted at the season's grand scale. In a conversation with Deadline they likened the undertaking to creating "eight blockbuster movies." Matt Duffer described it as "our most personal story" adding "It was super intense and emotional to film — for us and for our actors. We’ve been making this show together for almost 10 years. There was a lot of crying. There was so much crying. The show means so much to all of us and everyone put their hearts and souls into it. And we hope — and believe — that passion will translate to the screen."
Adding to the anticipation Netflix recently shared a cryptic clue on Instagram. A missing person’s flyer featured Jane Hopper (Eleven) last seen near Hawkins High School on June 13 1986. The post with the flyer questioned "Who’s really looking for Jane Hopper? You’re not ready for what’s to come in ‘Stranger Things’ 5." This detail sets the stage for season 5 which Netflix confirmed will take place in the fall of 1987 approximately a year after Eleven's disappearance teased in the flyer and following the events of season 4 set in March 1986.
Further fueling excitement David Harbour and Finn Wolfhard have also spoken about the final season’s emotional depth and scale. Harbour mentioned to Variety that the ending is "quite moving and quite beautiful". Wolfhard drew a parallel to Toy Story 3 describing the filming experience as a poignant farewell after a decade long journey.
Bower himself offered additional hints about Vecna's arc in season 5. Speaking with ScreenRant at MegaCon Orlando he teased "Without giving anything away you know I have had some artistically really powerful moments this season that as an artist you just hope happen you can't really prepare for them. They just kind of appear out of thin air." He also described the emotional weight of the role and the sense of release upon completing his final scenes. "Somebody took a photo of me after we finished the last scene and I just looked like a man that's just been carrying so much weight for so long" Bower revealed.
