Immunity Challenge Overload: Eva's "Autism Episode" and a Moment of Unexpected Compassion

It all went down during an immunity challenge. Contestant Eva Erickson was struggling big time with the table maze part of the challenge. She just could not seem to land that final ball. Pressure was on her tribe needed to win to avoid tribal council. Eva a PhD student explained that she started feeling seriously overstimulated. She called it her "Autism episode."

Eva said her brain got stuck in a loop of "I can’t do it. Why can’t I do it?" All the stress and pressure just became too much. She felt ungrounded and overwhelmed and her tribemates did not really understand what was happening. See Eva had only told one person about her autism fellow contestant Joe Hunter. She had let Joe a fire captain know in the season premiere that she has Autism and what he could do if she ever got overwhelmed during the game.

After the challenge when her tribe swarmed her to celebrate her finally landing the ball they did not realize Eva was still struggling. They didn't know she was overstimulated and "physically cannot control myself I don’t have the capability to calm down here because I’m so overstimulated" as Eva put it.

Across the challenge Joe was watching Eva struggle and he looked really worried. Jeff Probst noticed Joe’s concern and in a total Survivor first he did something amazing. Jeff actually gave Joe permission to leave his own tribe's mat and go comfort Eva. Tribes are usually kept separate but this was different.

Jeff asked "Joe do you want to give her hug?" Joe did not hesitate. He went straight to Eva hugged her tight and told her "You’re good. Deep breath remember?" Eva then asked Joe to hold her hands just like she had told him to do before. Joe held her hands placed his forehead on hers and kept reassuring her. "You’re in a safe place" he told her. It was an incredibly touching moment.

Eva later called Joe "my superhero". She explained that the compression from the hug and Joe holding her hands really helped calm her down and "get grounded" breaking her out of that overwhelming loop. After Joe helped Eva calm down Jeff asked Joe why he felt it was important to step in even though it could expose his game. Joe a dad himself simply said "If it exposes it exposes but she was in need and I would want someone to treat my daughter that way if they were playing this game."
