Hey comedy fans and news junkies did you catch The Daily Show recently? Things got interesting this past week as they dove into some pretty serious topics with their signature comedic spin. We are talking about gun control church initiatives and even Elon Musk getting the classic Daily Show treatment. Let's break down what happened because you might have missed some gems.
Michigan Church's Gun Buyback Program Gets Hilarious (and Heartfelt) Spotlight on The Daily Show
So The Daily Show sent correspondent Desi Lydic all the way to Southfield Michigan to check out something pretty unique: a gun buyback program run by St. David's Episcopal Church. Yep you heard it right a church tackling gun violence head-on. And of course The Daily Show found a way to make it both funny and thought-provoking.
Rev. Chris Yaw the rector at St. David's sat down with Desi to talk about their efforts. Turns out this church is serious about getting unwanted guns off the streets. They have organized eight buyback events in the Detroit area over the last three years and they have collected over 650 firearms! That is a lot of potential tragedies averted.
Rev. Yaw pointed out the crazy situation in America where "it’s a lot easier to get a gun than to get rid of a gun." He also mentioned that just offering "thoughts and prayers" is not cutting it anymore people want real action. Their first event was so popular cars lined up for two miles and they ran out of gift cards (which they were offering in exchange for guns) in just 20 minutes!
The segment even showed Desi visiting a workshop where they literally sawed the collected firearms in half before properly destroying them. St. David's is working with local police the University of Michigan and others to make this happen. And their efforts are making a real difference even influencing new gun safety laws in Michigan requiring complete destruction of guns turned in at buyback events.
Jon Stewart Returns and Immediately Takes on Elon Musk's "Nazi Salute" Controversy in Epic Monologue

Of course The Daily Show also tackled the always-trending topic of Elon Musk. Jon Stewart in a recent monologue went right after Musk's controversial salute during Donald Trump's inauguration celebration. Remember that? The one that looked a bit too much like a certain salute from history?
Musk faced heavy criticism for the gesture and even his own family reportedly pushed back on it. Weekend Update on SNL already joked about it (remember Michael Che's "Nazis made nice cars" line?) and now The Daily Show was adding their voice to the mix.
Stewart addressed Musk's offer to come on The Daily Show for an interview but only if it aired unedited. Stewart was like "sure bring it on!" But then Musk seemed to backtrack claiming Stewart "can not be trusted" because he is "partisan." Oh the drama!
In the same monologue Stewart went on to discuss the meeting between Donald Trump JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. It turned out to be a pretty epic segment reportedly one of Stewart's longest and strongest monologues ever. Leave it to Jon Stewart to jump right back into the political fray and deliver some serious comedic heat.
