Alright Yellowstone fans are you ready to unpack the latest episode of 1923? "Journey the Rivers of Iron" was intense. Seriously this episode was packed with drama suspense and some seriously gruesome moments that you might have watched through your fingers. But don't worry we are here to break down all the key moments and get you up to speed on everything that happened with the Duttons and beyond!
Dutton Ranch on the Brink: Zane's Grisly Surgery and a Glimmer of Hope Amidst Whitfield's Evil Plan
Let's head back to the Yellowstone Ranch where things are well... still pretty dire but maybe with a tiny spark of hope. Poor Zane the ranch foreman was in bad shape after that beating right? Well Episode 4 throws us right into a graphic scene where Jacob and Jack are prepping him for some seriously intense brain surgery. We are talking a hand drill and a head brace level of intense.
The surgery scene is not for the faint of heart folks. It is described as gory and gruesome and even makes Jack want to lose his lunch. But against all odds and maybe some questionable 1923 medical practices it works! Zane actually survives this meatball surgery and is miraculously on the mend. He's even ready for revenge which is classic Zane. Jacob assures him they will deal with their enemies because that's just what Duttons do.
While Zane is recovering Whitfield is busy being evil. He is wining and dining investors pitching his plan to transform Montana into a playground for the wealthy. His three-step plan involves airliners freeways and resorts all to make Montana the next hot spot for rich folks from Chicago and New York. Banner Creighton is on board with Whitfield's scheme but even he seems a little uneasy about the whole "bulldozing the Duttons" part. Whitfield wants Banner to raise an army of sheepherders and miners to take the Yellowstone by force. Things are definitely escalating fast on the land war front.
Alex's Train Trauma and Spencer's Texas Trouble: Dutton Diaspora Faces More Hardship

Meanwhile the Duttons scattered across the globe are not having an easier time. Alex is still reeling from her shipwreck and now she gets mugged in Grand Central Station in New York City. If you thought things could not get worse for her you were wrong. A creep follows her into the restroom and steals everything leaving her broke and with a black eye. But typical Alex she is not giving up. She literally jumps onto a moving train headed for Billings determined to reach the ranch despite everything life throws at her.
Spencer's journey home is equally chaotic. After his friend Luca's death Spencer gets picked up by a sheriff in Texas. Thinking he is getting a ride to the train station Spencer quickly learns it's more like a ride to jail. The sheriff knows about the illegal booze and blackmails Spencer into helping bust some bootleggers. Of course things go sideways there's a shootout and Spencer ends up handcuffed to a steering wheel. But come on this is Spencer Dutton we are talking about. He escapes frees a tarred-and-feathered prostitute along the way (because why not?) and hops onto a train heading west. But even the train is not safe. He encounters some sketchy hobos who want to tax him for his seat. Spencer being Spencer handles that situation with his shotgun in true Dutton style.
Teonna's Texas Trouble and a Glimmer of Hope: Wanted Posters and Cowboy Kindness

Teonna is still on the run in Texas with her father and Pete. For a brief moment things actually seem okay-ish for her. They are working with some cowboys rounding up cattle and even find a little bit of joy in their hard work. But this is 1923 and happiness is fleeting for the Duttons. While at a rodeo Teonna spots "Wanted" posters with her face on them. The sketch might not be great but the message is clear: America is still hunting for her and her freedom is still a long way off.
